OUR GOAL IS THE HEALTH OF OUR CLIENTS
AT ST. FRANCIS CHIROPRACTIC HEALTH CENTER We merge the techniques of Thompson, Grostic Upper Cervical, Sacral Occipital Technique (SOT) and Activator with comprehensive Nutritional Consultation to enable the body to pursue it's desire to achieve a healthy state.
Earned Doctorate of Chiropractic from Life College in Marietta, Ga. Studies also included Post doctorates studies in Nutrition, plus studies for the Clinical Nutrition Examination. Also earned B.S. in Mathematics with emphasis in Pre-Medical courses. Two papers have been published in peer reviewed nutritional journals: Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia and Prostatitis.
The mission of the Integrated Health Center (IHC) portion of St. Francis Chiropractic Health center is to provide nutritional consultation to people with chronic problems. These "problems" may have been a mystery to the health care community for years. As a Certified Clinical Nutritionist an emphasis is placed in the practice and education explaining the need to keep healthy with nutrition. The saying "we are what we eat" should be stated "we are what we absorb."
How we digest our foods, our enzyme levels and the acid or base levels of saliva, urine and blood, tell a lot about the status of our health. Modification of these factors, in either direction, can have a dramatic change in our health. Disease conditions can flourish in an unbalanced environment. Most health problems can be traced back to poor or improper nutrition and digestion. The tools being used at IHC will help determine the functioning of your systems. Our interest and direction is in creating wellness through a rebalancing of your body systems. If all else has failed for you in the past, this may be the beginning of the healing journey you have been searching for.
Drug-induced nutrient depletion is used to see the effect of prescription drugs on your nutritional state. We, at IHC, never remove you from MD prescribed drugs. We offer a nutritional balance for your system.
ENZYMES
Complementing Health With Digestive & Proteolytic Enzymes
Most people will agree on the importance of diet to staying healthy and to prevent disease. Proper nutrition is the key to the regeneration of healthy cells and to a strong immune system. Nutrition, though, is not simply the choice of good food or high quality supplements. We also have to digest, absorb and transport nutrients and eliminate waste in order for the body to truly benefit. Hence, in most cases, we believe supplemental digestive enzymes are vital to these goals.
To appreciate the role of supplemental digestive enzymes, it is first essential to understand the reasons and consequences for maldigestion and malabsorption. First, there are recurrent assaults to our bodies from stress, from not chewing our food thoroughly, from consuming food that is overly processed and laden with toxic agricultural chemicals, from breathing polluted air, and from ingesting prescription medications. As a result, our liver, kidneys, colon, skin and lungs are under tremendous pressure to eliminate toxins. Inadequate function of any of these organs lead to increased toxin load and a compromised immune system, which has profound health consequences.
Secondly, when proper digestion does not take place, carbohydrates ferment, proteins putrefy, and fats become rancid. These toxic materials contribute to and may even initiate
the degenerative process. Nutrients are not released from the food we eat and become unavailable to our bodies for repair, maintenance or creation of new healthy cells. Unfriendly microorganisms thrive on poorly digested matter and their metabolic by-products often become free radicals. Maldigestion also leads to a shift in pH, further supporting the proliferation of unfriendly microorganisms. The increase in free radicals and change in pH eventually can cause alterations in the genetic makeup of the cell.
Initial maldigestion may be expressed as flatulence, indigestion, allergies, fatigue or constipation. If poor digestion and proliferation of unfriendly microorganisms continue, degeneration and chronic disease becomes evident.
What role do supplemental digestive enzymes play in preventing this situation? Digestive enzymes break down the food we eat into simple nutrients the body’s cells can use. By improving digestion, supplemental digestive enzymes will enhance the bioavailability of the nutrients we ingest. The obvious benefit is overall improved nutrition that results in enhanced immune function, decreased allergic reactions and better elimination of toxic waste. Every time we cook our foods, we are killing the enzymes that are in the food. That is an important reason for adding supplemental enzymes to our diet to aid in preventing maldigestion and all the unhealthy results of it. Evaluating the digestive system should be a top priority in assessing overall health and the need for supplemental digestive and proteolytic enzymes. Proteolytic enzymes are used predominately as a therapy for the body via the digestive system. These enzymes can help the body digest undigested food elements, start to bring about a positive alkaline shift in pH, decrease the numbers of unfriendly microorganisms, trigger an immune response, improve the overall efficiency of the digestive system and immune system and most important of all, start making a positive change in people who are sick or of chronically poor health.
Life would not exist without enzymes. Virtually every biochemical process that occurs in our body needs the driving force of enzymes. There are hundreds of thousands of enzymes active in every organ, tissue, and fluid and each has its own function. Enzymes activate our muscles, stimulate our nerves, and make our heart beat, keep us breathing and even help us think. These complex biochemical substances are also able to convert nutrients from food to strong, healthy bodies.
There are three distinct types of enzymes: Digestive enzymes, which are secreted by the body to digest food, Metabolic Enzymes, which run the biochemical processes of the body and Food Enzymes, which are contained in raw foods. Food enzymes are divided into four main types, Proteases, which break down protein, Lipases, which break down fats, Celluloses, which break down fiber and Amylases, which break down carbohydrates. Three amylases are essential for the digestion of carbohydrates: lactase, which breaks down lactose (milk sugar), sucrase, which breaks down sucrose (refined sugar) and maltase, which breaks down maltose (malt sugar).
Supplemental enzymes, which are derived from plants and animals, are therefore obtained from our food. Assimilation, digestion and pH factors dictate the use of plant-based enzymes over animal enzymes. The ph of animal enzymes does not lend themselves to ease of assimilation or digestion in the extremely acidic gastric (stomach) environment. For enzymes to be effective, they need to be absorbed into the blood stream via the intestines. Supplemental enzymes that do not withstand the acidic environment of the stomach, will never enter the intestines, or be available to absorb into the blood stream, making them unviable. Worse yet, we receive no benefit from them, even if they started out active or viable enzymes. Supplemental enzymes are either used as digestive enzymes with food or as a proteolytic enzyme, on an empty stomach, for various therapeutic uses.
MEAL SUPPORT
Meal Support is used as a digestive enzyme to enable us to digest food that lacks the necessary enzymes due to cooking and processing. Meal support (digestive enzyme) is the single most important dietary supplement to maintain our digestive health and overall preventative to for the body. Proper digestion is the first key to good health.
